Amazon Tours |

Hello, Captain Bill Grimes here. Dawn on the Amazon has provided the best Amazon Tour Day Trips from Iquitos Peru for several years. Circumstances change slowly, but they do change, and Dawn on the Amazon is changing with them. We are making day trips one of our specialties, more of a priority than ever before. This attitude will be reflected in our pricing, our choices, and our attention to detail. You can trust Dawn on the Amazon. Tour operators should be held to a high standard. Your trust is one of the most valuable assets I have, and I intend to keep it that way. I have eliminated some day trips, added others, and changed some combinations to provide the most fun, interest, and value to you. I hope you will approve. I will only benefit if you decide that Dawn on the Amazon is the best tour provider and then you tell your friends. I have become an expert on day trips the only way there is, the hard way, by operating hundreds of day trips and listening to my guests. I listened. This is what you taught me. This is what Dawn on the Amazon offers. The most popular place near Iquitos Peru is the Butterfly Farm. You want to see Pink Dolphins. You are interested in the Belen Market. We have combined your three most desirable objectives into one full day trip, 9:00am to 4:30-5:00pm. Dawn on the Amazon proudly presents the #1 day trip in Iquitos Peru, our new…

Amazon Tour #1 The Belen Market, Looking for Pink Dolphins, The Butterfly Farm
The loose itinerary goes something (but probably not exactly) like this: Your knowledgeable, nice, English-Spanish speaking guide will meet you in the lobby of your hotel or, if you prefer, at the Dawn on the Amazon Café at 9:00am.
He or she will arrange and pay for your motocarro transportation to the Belen Market and escort you around parts of the 20 plus square block “Super Market” for a couple of hours or so, where everything that can be bought and sold in Iquitos…is bought and sold. The adventure continues when

Hand rolled mapasho
you hop into a motocarro and race through the city streets to my home port at the Hunting and Fishing Club on the Nanay River where the boat will be waiting. You will meet your experienced Amazon boat pilot, cast off, and make yourself comfortable by around noon. You will enjoy your picnic on the boat on the way to look for Pink Dolphins, and on to the Butterfly Farm.

Pink dolphin
The picnic usually (but not always) consists of three types of ripe, hand chosen seasonal tropical fruits, the best we can find, french bread and cheese sandwich, two if you want, and either a tamale or humita, with two choices of sauces. This can vary according to availability but it will be something similarly delicious and lots of it. This could be a good time to pop the cork on your complimentary bottle of champagne or, if you prefer, beer, soda pop, or purified bottled water. It’s up to you.
The time will vary, but you will probably finish the picnic by 1:00 or 1:30 and be ready to hike to the Butterfly Farm shortly after lunch. You will spend another couple of hours enjoying what is officially called the Amazon Animal Orphanage and Pilpintuwasi Butterfly Farm, home of over 40 species of the most colorful insects of the Amazon

Blue Morpho butterfly
macaws, parrots, an anteater, manatees, monkeys, a jaguar, and many other bird and animal species living in a wild, wonderful botanical garden full of flowers, fruits, and medicinal plants. Then you leisurely return back toward Iquitos while looking for pink dolphins. I estimate we see

Marybelle at the Butterfly Farm
Pink Dolphins on 85% of our day trips, there is no guarantee but the odds are good. The boat returns to the Hunting and Fishing Club, around 4:30 and your guide assists you back to your hotel lobby. You will be tired but happy. At the end of the day, I’m sure you will agree that this was not some touristy day. There is nothing less touristy than the Belen Market,
| which is a slice of real life if ever there was one. This was what you came to Iquitos to see and do in the first place. Enjoy your day. The price is $74.75 per adult, ($65 if there are two adults and you pay 48 hours in advance), children age 12 or under 20% off. Includes guide, all transportation, entry fees, all the pure water you can drink, a delicious picnic lunch. Send an email to bill@dawnontheamazon.com to arrange this day trip. Get the $10 discount per adult, if there is a minimum of two adults, by paying 48 hours in advance. Remember, 48 hours in advance. | Amazon Tour #2 Belen Market, the Floating village of Belen, and the Three River tour |
If the Butterfly Farm doesn’t sound like your thing, choose my personal favorite, the Belen Market, the Floating village of Belen and the Three River tour past the ports, combined with bird watching and looking for Pink Dolphins.
One of our safe tour boats will

meet you at the bottom of the Belen Market in the Port of Venice.
You will cruise upstream on the Itaya River to a peaceful place for your picnic. Then you will take a leisurely cruise past the floating village of Belen, Venice of the Amazon, down the Itaya in front of the city of Iquitos and her busy ports, past ships, boats of all sizes full of bananas and charcoal, tugs, barges, colectivos, peque-peques, and fishermen in dugout canoes.

| You will see and photograph giant logs timbered from virgin rainforest, watch for pink dolphins at the confluence of the Itaya and the Amazon, and cruise downstream on the mightiest river on earth to the Nanay River, with another good chance to see dolphins, then cruise up the Nanay to the Hunting and Fishing Club and be assisted by your guide back to your hotel. The price is $74.75 per adult, ($65 if there are two adults and you pay 48 hours in advance), children age 12 or under 20% off. | Amazon Tour #3 A Day in the Life |
| You’ve told me and told me you don’t want touristy traps. I listen to you. This is for you. Amazon Tour #3 is still in the developmental stages. We are very excited to be arranging something completely new and unique to Dawn on the Amazon. This will be the ultimate non-touristy Amazon Tour day trip. I expect this slice of real life along the river to be the third most popular day trip. You will spend the day with a nice family of riberiños with cute children as they live their life. You can watch or help, hang out in a hammock, go birdwatching, fishing or swimming. You will eat what they eat, (we cheat a little here and supply purified water that they will use to cook your meal and wash the fruits, vegetables, and dishes) This day trip will be operational by July 1, 2010. The price is $74.75 per adult, ($65 if there are two adults and you pay 48 hours in advance), children age 12 or under 20% off. Includes English-Spanish speaking guide, all transportation, entry fees, all the pure water you can drink, a delicious picnic lunch. | Amazon Tour #4 Monkey Island |
Brought back by popular demand. We stopped providing this tour 3 years ago because it is fairly far away from Iquitos. I thought it made a better two day, over night cruise, but you disagreed. I listened to you and learned. But you have to work with me on this one. There must be a minimum of 3 adults, or the monetary equivalent. I understand you will

Amazon Tour #5 Fishing Day Trip
The Fishing day trip is brought back by popular demand and improved. I stopped operating day trip fishing excursions in the wild because there is too much fishing pressure close to Iquitos. We got skunked too many times. My guests were disappointed. It was bad for my reputation as an expert fisherman, even though I doubt Larry Larson could have caught fish those days.

Fishing in Llanchama Cocha
| Problem solved! Now we go to a private, inland, stocked lake. I’m considered an expert again. Catch fish, have fun, eat what you catch on the charcoal grill. Fishing gear rental $25 extra or bring your own. The price is $74.75 per adult, ($65 if there are two adults and you pay 48 hours in advance), plus $25 fishing gear rental unless you bring your own, children age 12 or under 20% off. Includes English-Spanish speaking guide, all transportation, entry fees, all the pure water you can drink, a delicious picnic lunch. | Amazon Tour #6 Amazon Golf Course |
An Amazon Golf Adventure. Not so much birdies and eagles; more like boas in the rough, caiman sunning in the sand traps, piranhas lurking in the water hazards. It’s the only course in the world where golfers are issued a machete to carry in their golf bag. Avoid the anaconda.

Dawn on the Amazon no longer recommends day trips to the Jungle Menagerie, Las Boas, the Yagua Village, or the Bora Village. This decision is partially market driven, and partially morally driven, a good combination to continue staying ahead of the curve. Like I said at the beginning, circumstances change. The Jungle Menagerie and Las Boas failed to take good enough care of the animals and snakes to suit me. The Yagua and Boras are too commercial and touristy. My reputation is at stake on every day trip. I’m not taking any chances. Our 7 recommended day trips, one for every day of the week, that’s plenty, guarantee my reputation will be in the top 2% of all tour operators. I won’t be satisfied with less, and neither should you.
